William J. Havlicek's revealing book is based largely on Vincent van Gogh's astonishing letters of which over 900 exist. This important work-the result of over 15 years of research-provides new insight into the artist's true character nurtured from his abiding faith, the influence of family, and the tender solicitude he felt for mankind.Havlicek's book holds some compelling revelations, among them the role played by Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, his sister-in-law, without whom little of the inimitable Vincent would ever have been known; and the artist's vicarious relationship with Charles Dickens. But perhaps most revealing is Havlicek's discovery of how the inspired words of Victor Hugo, embodied in one of his characters in Les Misérables, gave Van Gogh the idea for one of his most celebrated paintings of all The Starry Night. This particular revelation is sure to astound the art world. The book also dispels much of the myth that has come to surround Vincent's tumultuous life. In the words of the author, the book illuminates instead "...an unknown, adventurous, deeply compassionate man whose essence seems to have been lost in the dramatic and often apocryphal stories surrounding his illness and early death. My effort is to resurrect an unknown aspect of Vincent-one that is even heroic and certainly praiseworthy...".

This is an absolutely spectacular book. There is simply no other book like it on Vincent van Gogh. It is the only book I have read that truly does justice to the depth of truth, beauty and goodness that both attracted van Gogh and that was evidenced in his work, in his "longing for the infinite" in Havlicek's words (and, I might add, in the words of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI). Every other book, even the most scholarly, pales in comparison - as the light of Limbo in Dante's Inferno, home of philosophers who live without pain but without hope, is all but extinguished in the radiant light of Paradise. The reductionism evident in other books (reduction to the social, psychological, and indeed pathological) simply shows the various authors' inability to capture even a glimmer of what their subject saw. This is not to say that those books are not useful for their detail, etc. but that without this one, without the religious dimension at the heart of every human being (yes, even atheists), we are left with a severely truncated and hence severely distorted understanding. This book is especially brilliant on the connection with Hugo's deeply Christian "Les Miserables" (which one would think was a political novel, judging from the film!) as well as the problems with various art historians who make "Vincent the real person secondary to an abstract process in the grip of a deterministic force."Product details

Van Gogh Untold Journey PHD WILLIAM J HAVLICEK 9780982487211 Books Reviews
After going to a lecture, & book signing by Dr. Havlicek my interests were definitely sparked. Van Gogh has always been of interest to me, & he still is!
I continue to read the book, but my mind wanders at times when I'm reading about the research. Once back on track, I'm still interested., & still reading.
Lovely book, well written and insightful.
Reverence for his work made a deep impression on me.
Enjoyed this book
I am a slow reader but have already discovered many absorbing details on Van Gogh's world view. He had an amazing heart for the less fortunate in society which he shared with Charles Dickens an author whose books he devoured.
I think he was a genius at capturing the moment in a dramatic and colourful way in his art. The author superbly brings out the noble side of Van Gogh character which other authors have missed.
I have still much to learn as I progress through the book. Highly recommended.
Certainly well researched. At times read like a thesis prepared for publication . On occasions there were paintings or etchings spoken of in the text, however a figure of that painting or etching was not proximate to the text; on other occasions no painting title was given immediate to the painting itself.
Excellently written from a thorough study of Van Gogh's family letters. Portrays Vincent Van Gogh in an entirely different light than I had always heard. Excellently printed with much reproduction of his art. Very well worth the hard-copy price even for my overflowing library.
